During the early 2000s, reports began emerging from the northern Indian state of Haryana describing a gentle teenager whose head rose nearly two feet above the roofs of standard automobiles and local shop awnings. Born in 1986 in the Rohtak district, Vikas Kumar Uppal—affectionately nicknamed “Viku” by his childhood friends—remains widely regarded as the tallest human being ever born in the history of India. Although conflicting measurements surrounded his exact peak height before his tragic death at the age of twenty-one, both his verified newspaper measurements and the extraordinary dimensions of his hands and feet placed him among the select few individuals in human history to cross the eight-foot threshold.

Childhood in Rohtak and Relentless Pituitary Growth

Born in 1986 into a middle-class Jat farming family in Rohtak, Haryana, Vikas Uppal entered the world as an ordinary infant to parents of completely normal stature; his father, Satyawan Uppal, stood under six feet tall. However, unlike cases of gigantism that begin only at puberty, Vikas began outgrowing every child in his neighborhood while still in primary school. By the time he was ten years old, he already towered over his schoolteachers at well over six feet tall.

As he entered his mid-teens, his growth accelerated due to a large hormone-secreting adenoma tumor pressing against his pituitary gland at the base of the brain. By the age of eighteen in 2004, when reporters and photographers from the Indian daily newspaper The Tribune visited him at his family home and measured him carefully against a wall with a tape measure, Vikas stood an astonishing eight feet three inches tall (two hundred and fifty-one centimeters)—already matching the height later recorded by Guinness World Record holder Sultan Kosen. His hands measured thirteen inches long from the crease of his wrist to the tip of his middle finger, while his feet required custom-cobbler shoes measuring nineteen inches in length.

The Controversy Over the 8 Feet 9 Inches Claim

Over the final three years of his life between 2004 and 2007, because his pituitary tumor remained active and untreated, Vikas continued to grow slowly even past his twentieth birthday. Indian media outlets, doctors, and local officials reported that by 2006, his height had climbed to anywhere between eight feet six inches and eight feet nine inches (two hundred and sixty-seven centimeters)—a figure that, if officially verified under clinical guidelines, would have made him the second tallest human being in all of medical history behind only America’s Robert Wadlow (eight feet eleven inches).

Why was Vikas Uppal never officially listed in the Guinness Book of World Records despite towering over the official record holders of his era? According to accounts from his family and Indian journalists, Vikas was a deeply shy young man who grew weary of being treated as a circus spectacle whenever he stepped outside his house. While he briefly appeared in a cameo role as a gentle giant in the 2005 Bollywood comedy film Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya alongside Salman Khan and dreamed of playing basketball or joining the wrestling circuit, the financial cost and logistical difficulty of bringing official international adjudicators to perform three-times-a-day clinical measurements—combined with his rapidly deteriorating health and severe joint pain—meant the paperwork was never finalized during his brief life.

Tragic Death on the Operating Table in 2007

By the summer of 2007, at just twenty-one years of age, the biological price of his extreme stature had reached a critical point. The expanding pituitary tumor inside his skull was causing blinding headaches, compressing his optic nerves, and straining his cardiovascular system as his heart worked overtime to pump blood across an eight-foot-plus frame.

In June 2007, Vikas was admitted to the Agrasen Hospital in New Delhi, where a team of neurosurgeons attempted a high-risk emergency craniotomy on June thirtieth to remove the brain tumor and save his life. Administering anesthesia and managing blood pressure in patients with extreme acromegalic gigantism is notoriously treacherous due to enlarged airway tissues and cardiac hypertrophy; tragically, following a sixteen-hour struggle on the operating table, Vikas Uppal suffered fatal complications and passed away on June thirtieth, 2007, leaving behind a grieving family in Rohtak and an enduring legend as the tallest son of India.
