In a country of one point four billion people that has produced global basketball icons like seven-foot-six Yao Ming and Guinness record holder Bao Xishun, the title of the tallest living man in China belongs to a quiet, soft-spoken native of Shanxi Province who exceeds them both by several inches: Zhang Juncai. Born in 1966 into an ordinary farming family, Zhang grew to an extraordinary verified height of two hundred and forty-two centimeters—or seven feet eleven and a quarter inches—standing just fractions of an inch below the absolute tallest individuals on Earth while navigating the medical and social realities of extreme pituitary gigantism.

Normal Youth in Shanxi and the 16-Year-Old Growth Surge

Zhang Juncai was born on March thirty-first, 1966, in a rural village in Dingxiang County, Xinzhou, in northern China’s Shanxi Province. Neither his father, his mother, nor any of his siblings stood out in a crowd; every single member of his immediate family possessed a completely average height well under five feet ten inches. Throughout his elementary and middle school years, Zhang himself grew at a totally normal pace, blending in seamlessly with his classmates on the family farm.

Everything changed abruptly in 1982 when Zhang turned sixteen years old. While most boys his age were beginning to slow down their adolescent growth spurts, Zhang’s body suddenly shifted into overdrive. Shooting past six feet and then seven feet within just a few years, he continued growing well into his twenties, accompanied by severe, throbbing headaches behind his eyes and chronic fatigue in his legs. By the time he reached twenty-six years old in 1992, doctors measured him at two hundred and thirty-seven centimeters (seven feet nine inches), and over the next seven years he added another five centimeters, stabilizing at his remarkable peak stature of two hundred and forty-two centimeters (7 feet 11.2 inches)—nearly half a foot taller than NBA Hall of Famer Yao Ming.

The 1999 Pituitary Surgery in Guangzhou That Saved His Life

The cause of Zhang Juncai’s relentless growth—and the debilitating headaches that began threatening his eyesight and heart in the late 1990s—was a benign tumor known as a somatotroph adenoma growing on his pituitary gland at the base of the brain. Because the tumor pressed against his optic nerves while pumping continuous excess human growth hormone into his bloodstream, Zhang would have continued growing until his heart failed had medical intervention not arrived.

In the spring of 1999, at the age of thirty-three, Zhang traveled south to Guangdong Province, where neurosurgeons at the Pearl River Hospital in Guangzhou performed a delicate operation to remove the pituitary adenoma. The surgery was a resounding success: it immediately relieved the crushing pressure inside his skull, cured his chronic headaches, and permanently halted his vertical bone growth at 242 centimeters. That same year, while recovering inside the Guangzhou hospital, Zhang Juncai made international headlines across China for a heartwarming gesture of solidarity, paying a bedside visit to a fellow giant patient: twenty-seven-year-old Yao Defen, who stood seven feet eight inches tall as the tallest woman in the world and was undergoing treatment for the exact same pituitary condition.

Finding Love With He Xinlian and Life at Nearly Eight Feet

While extreme stature often brings social isolation, Zhang Juncai found enduring happiness in his personal life. In 1999, he met and fell in love with He Xinlian, a lively woman from Chongqing who stood five feet five inches (165 centimeters) tall—nearly two and a half feet shorter than her husband. Despite the dramatic height contrast that drew stares whenever they walked down the street holding hands, the couple married and built a warm, supportive partnership, with He Xinlian traveling beside him and managing his daily health needs.

In novembro 2004, Zhang Juncai was officially recognized as China’s tallest man, towered over only in modern history by his unverified fellow countryman Wang Fengjun and later rivaled globally by Türkiye’s Sultan Kosen (251 cm). Living at nearly eight feet tall in modern China required constant physical adaptation: his hands measured nearly a foot long from wrist to middle fingertip, his custom-made leather shoes required a European size fifty-eight (roughly a US size twenty-two), and standard beds, buses, and doorways were impossibly small. Later in life, after suffering a hip femur fracture in 2009 that left him reliant on crutches and wheelchairs inside his Shanxi home, Zhang Juncai’s resilience and gentle humor continued to endear him to the Chinese public as a towering symbol of quiet perseverance.
