When Chinese basketball center Sun Mingming stepped onto a professional hardwood court, even seven-foot opposing centers looked like point guards standing beside him. Measuring an officially verified seven feet nine inches (236.17 centimeters) in bare feet and weighing 370 pounds (168 kilograms), Sun held the Guinness World Record as the tallest professional basketball player in the world during his active career. Yet behind the viral clips of him dunking the basketball without his heels ever leaving the floor lay a dramatic medical rescue in the United States that saved his life and unlocked his athletic potential.

Growing Up in Harbin and the 2005 Brain Tumor Diagnosis

Born on August twenty-third, 1983, in a small rural town outside Bayan County near Harbin in China’s northeastern Heilongjiang Province, Sun Mingming grew at an extraordinary pace from early childhood, passing six feet six inches before his fifteenth birthday. He did not pick up a basketball until he was fifteen years old, when provincial sports officials spotted his towering frame and invited him to train with local youth squads.

In early 2005, at the age of twenty-one, Sun traveled to the United States to train in Los Angeles and audition for scouts ahead of the NBA Draft. During workouts, however, coaches noticed a troubling pattern: despite his massive physical presence, Sun grew exhausted after running the court just three or four times, suffered from chronic tunnel vision, and experienced severe headaches. Because he lacked medical insurance in the United States, his agent and trainer arranged an examination at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where an MRI scan revealed the life-threatening culprit:

  • Pituitary Adenoma (Acromegalic Gigantism): Growing at the base of Sun’s skull was a benign tumor Pressing directly against his optic nerves and pumping massive, unregulated streams of human growth hormone into his bloodstream.
  • Cardiovascular and Visual Danger: Doctors warned that without immediate surgical removal of the tumor, Sun would soon go completely blind and eventually suffer fatal heart failure as his internal organs enlarged under the hormonal strain.

Crowdfunding Surgery and Miraculous Athletic Recovery

Faced with a hospital bill exceeding $100,000 that neither Sun nor his modest farming family in China could pay, his sports agent, Charles Bonsignore, launched a grassroots crowdfunding drive that raised over $70,000 from basketball fans, charities, and fellow athletes. On September twenty-sixth, 2005, neurosurgeon Dr. Hrayr Shahinian performed a delicate minimally invasive endoscopic surgery through Sun’s nasal passage to extract the pituitary tumor completely.

The impact on Sun’s physical capabilities was instantaneous. Within months of the surgery halting his excess hormone production, his peripheral vision returned, his chronic headaches vanished, and his cardiovascular endurance and lateral foot speed improved dramatically—allowing him to embark on a decade-long professional basketball journey across North America, Mexico, Japan, and China:

  1. American Minor Leagues and the Harlem Globetrotters: Beginning in 2006, Sun played for the Dodge City Legend in the USBL, the Maryland NightHawks in the ABA, and the Grand Rapids Flight, before touring briefly in 2007 with the legendary Harlem Globetrotters and playing professionally in Mexico (Fuerza Regia) and Japan (Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix).
  2. Championship Glory With the Beijing Ducks (2009–2014): Returning home to China in 2009 to join the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) alongside former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury, Sun became a beloved defensive anchor in the paint, helping Beijing win two CBA Championships in 2012 and 2014.

Hollywood Cameo With Jackie Chan and a Record-Setting Marriage

Outside the basketball arena, Sun Mingming’s larger-than-life charisma earned him a memorable place in pop culture. In the 2007 action-comedy blockbuster Rush Hour 3, Sun played the towering kung-fu student (“Kung Fu Giant”) who battles stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in a hilarious sequence where the five-foot-eight Chan has to climb up the walls just to reach Sun’s chin.

In August 2013, Sun Mingming entered the Guinness Book of World Records a second time when he married Chinese professional team-handball player Xu Yan, who stands a stately six feet one and a half inches (187.3 cm) tall. With a combined married height of 13 feet 10.72 inches (423.47 cm), Sun and Xu were officially certified as the tallest married couple living on planet Earth, transitioning after Sun’s basketball retirement into Chinese television acting and youth sports philanthropy.
